Lawrence Marrero
Early Years
Lawrence Marrero (1900-1959) was born into a musical family in New Orleans, LA. His brothers, Eddie and Simon played bass and John played the banjo. In 1919, Lawrence earned his first regular gig playing banjo with Wooden Joe Nicholas’ Camellia Brass Band and in 1920, he joined the Young Tuxedo Brass Band on the brass drum.
Success
Marrero made recordings with Bunk Johnson in 1942 and this was the beginning of the New Orleans Jazz Revival. Marrero was a favorite among jazz fans and musicians alike. He was a regular member of the George Lewis Band and was featured on many recordings until poor health forced him into retirement in late 1955. Marrero was known for his steady and swinging banjo that was the focal point of the rhythm section.
