John Robichaux

John Robicheaux (1866-1939) headed ‘sit-down’ dance orchestras that performed in theaters, restaurants, and other fine venues of New Orleans.

John was originally from Thibodeaux, Louisiana. He started playing music in the Excelsior Brass Band as a drummer and shortly after formed his own group, the John Robichaux Orchestra. In addition to leading the band, he also played accordion, violin, bass, and drums. Many great musicians of the city including Alphonse Picou, played in his group. Some of these musicians also taught at the Fisk School for Boys, where it is said Buddy Bolden studied.  John’s nephew was Joe Robichaux.
