Hot Five / Hot Seven

The Hot Five/ Hot Seven were Louis Armstrong’s band. They made recordings for Okeh from 1925 through 1928. The Hot Five featured New Orleanians Johnny Dodds on trumpet, Kid Ory on trombone, Johnny St. Cyr on banjo, and his wife Lil Harden on piano and vocals. The Hot Seven added Pete Briggs on tuba and Baby Dodds on drums, and John Thomas on trombone. These early recordings, made before modern microphones, were groundbreaking for Louis’ career and the evolution of jazz.
