Edward “Kid” Ory

Kid Ory (1886-1973)
Originally from Napoleonville and LaPlace, Kid came to New Orleans to become a bandleader, forming the Original Creole Jazz Band. He hired King” Oliver, Sidney Bechet, and later Louis Armstrong. Kid learned various instruments, and with George Brunies, created a solid trombone sound called tailgate, which put the swing in music. After moving to California, he created Spike’s Seven Pods of Pepper Orchestra. They changed history circa 1922 as the first African American jazz band to ever record, introducing the West Coast to jazz. Those songs included: “Society Blues” and “Ory’s Creole Trombone”.

Kid also made records in Chicago. In the 1940s, he created a Dixieland revival band in New Orleans (while cooking Creole dishes that often appeared in his albums), toured Europe in the 1950s, and even later moved to Hawaii. While in Los Angeles he wrote music for movies, “The Benny Goodman Story” and “New Orleans”.
