Alcide “Slow Drag” Pavageau
Alcide “Slow Drag” Pavageau was a talented bassist, dancer, and celebrator of New Orleans. He began by playing guitar and then gravitated toward the double bass. On the bass, he slapped the strings and produced a distinct tone. Alcide was suave and spoke in Patois. He danced well in competitions held on Basin Street and received the title of “The Grand Marshal of the Second Line” because he was so prominent in New Orleans street parades. His wife was Annie Pavageau, a pianist and vocalist.
Alcide played in the 1940s with George Lewis. In 1945 he went to New York to play in Bunk Johnson’s sessions. Alcide also toured the US and Europe with George Lewis in 1958. In 1961, he was the Grand Marshal for the Eureka Brass band. Sadly, Alcide passed away from complications after being mugged.
